Georgina's Gratitude - A Poem of Hope

Georgina, a Dominican woman filled with joy living in La Joya, Jarabacoa, was kind enough to share a poem she wrote about Mission of Hope cleaning the streets of her community. As a few HopeGo team members waited for lunch at Iglesia Fuente de Paz, Georgina walked up carrying a notebook, asking if she could read a poem she had written.

She proceeded to spread her arms wide and proclaim her gratitude for those serving with Mission of Hope, and seeing them clean the streets brought her both joy and a sense of pride for her community. Light flowed from Georgina as she spoke about the joy of the Lord, and the love she shared for both La Joya and Mission of Hope.

She explained how a current back injury prevented her from physically joining in the cleanup efforts, but she wanted to share her gratitude through her writing. Her poem told a story of gratitude, hope, and left everyone feeling like this community of people was collectively doing a good work together.

My mom was always the one who took care of me. And then, in 2021, my mom died. I can still remember the day so clearly. I felt so hopeless when I lost my mom. I didn't know what would happen to me. My mom's cousin is a teacher, and she and her husband took me in to care for me. They put me in school. I thank God for them every day. Today, I am in the 6th grade! And I love school. Math is my favorite subject—it makes me feel smart when I can solve a problem. I also love getting to be with friends at school and eating lunch together. The food helps us focus, which is important—especially during exam time. One day, I dream of becomin
