2024 Mid-Year Impact Report Story: Dominican Republic

impact report

Outside the city of Santiago, Dominican Republic, there’s a community of Haitian people living in deplorable conditions. Some community members have been there for years, while others have just arrived after fleeing Haiti amid the humanitarian crisis.

As one walks into the neighborhood, the conditions degrade as the demographic changes from Dominican homes to Haitian homes. Fenced-in homes with gardens turn into pieced-together shelters and trash piles in the stream. There is one small spigot of water to serve the estimated 200+ community members. The community is at the mercy of the landowners and there is no certainty as to when they will have access to water. There have been times when they have gone for days without water.

A local Haitian pastor we partner with at Mission of Hope has built relationships in the community. When he took members of our local team to learn more about the neighborhood, they were moved to do something. They decided the most pressing issue this community needed was sufficient access to clean water. It would help alleviate many of the sicknesses and sanitation issues the pastor has witnessed over the years.

Mission of Hope’s Church Advancement department is actively working with local leaders from the community to find a solution to the dire situation. When clean water is more readily available, this community will experience stability in new ways because people will say “yes” to help meet their needs.

The reality is that there are so many stories like these.

Moms who are desperately praying for the provision of a meal for their children. People who have no idea if they’ll find water today.

Your “yes” when you give to Mission of Hope serves men, women, and children across Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Together, we can make a great impact in the lives of the hurting and broken, showing them the love of Christ in tangible ways.

This was Francenia’s* reality three years ago. A mother from Cabaret, Haiti, Francenia made the heartbreaking decision to leave everything she knew behind. Her home. Her community. Her roots. Francenia’s story is one of resilience and faith. She recalls the days when her children attended school at the Mission of Hope campus in Titanyen, Haiti, and the times she found care and compassion at our clinic there, too. Those moments brought hope and stability during difficult times. Yet,

Neika's Story of Hope Neika, a student in one of the schools in our nutrition program, recently shared her story. "When my mom was pregnant with me, my dad left. My mom was always the one who took care of me. And then, in 2021, my mom died. I can still remember the day so clearly. I felt so hopeless when I lost my mom. I didn't know what would happen to me. My mom's cousin is a teacher, and she and her husband took me in to care for me. They put me in school. I thank God for them every day. Today, I am in the 6th grade! And I love school. Math is my favorite subject—it makes me feel smart when I can solve a problem. I also love getting to be with friends at school and eating lunch together. The food helps us focus, which is important—especially during exam time. One day, I dream of becomin
