The Tension of Celebration in the Midst of Devastation

For months, we’ve shared the atrocities of the humanitarian crisis happening right now in Haiti.

We know things like this are difficult to read and think about for our friends and neighbors in Haiti.

At the same time, in the midst of these circumstances, there are miraculous ways we have seen God equip and work through His people to serve one another.

The reality is that we are living in tension—the tension of the devastation and the awe of the strength and determination of the staff on the ground, both in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Below are a few snapshots of ministry across the island as we continue towards the goal of One Island. One Mission. When you partner with Mission of Hope , you are actively supporting and participating in making moments happen just like those shared below.

FOOD SECURITY

Our staff has been relentless in their efforts to serve and get food to those in greatest need. At the end of May, the port in Port-au-Prince reopened, allowing aid to move and in just three days, our heroic team in Haiti delivered 1.684 million meals throughout Port-au-Prince.

These meals are more than a plate of food. They are reminders of the worth, value, and dignity every person deserves to experience. They are support to the hurting and broken, a tangible reminder that they are not forgotten.

EDUCATION

This truly is a monumental milestone worth celebrating.

While reports show the closure of over 900 schools in Port-au-Prince, we simply cannot celebrate enough that so many students in our schools and partner schools have been able to continue their education during this time. It has not been easy, and the teachers, staff, and administrators have been heroes in protecting the children’s opportunity for education. The reality is that generations are being lost to the streets and to gang violence every single day. Without the opportunity of education, that is going to continue. Our Haitian staff is fighting back against that reality every single day.

CHURCH ADVANCEMENT

This subject resonates deeply with both the Dominican and Haitian pastors and the many challenges they face as they serve. We are thankful for the opportunity to encourage one another and pray for each other’s ministries.

They enjoyed the Christ-centered community and time spent with other moms in similar seasons of life. The topics of planning and caring for their families encouraged the moms and several of the women shared how they refused to miss Kléb Manman because of how valuable their time together is.

As one of our Haitian leaders shared, “There are problems in Haiti, but we see that God has positioned Mission of Hope as a tool for His glory and to serve. That is why we are here.”

This was Francenia’s* reality three years ago. A mother from Cabaret, Haiti, Francenia made the heartbreaking decision to leave everything she knew behind. Her home. Her community. Her roots. Francenia’s story is one of resilience and faith. She recalls the days when her children attended school at the Mission of Hope campus in Titanyen, Haiti, and the times she found care and compassion at our clinic there, too. Those moments brought hope and stability during difficult times. Yet,

Neika's Story of Hope Neika, a student in one of the schools in our nutrition program, recently shared her story. "When my mom was pregnant with me, my dad left. My mom was always the one who took care of me. And then, in 2021, my mom died. I can still remember the day so clearly. I felt so hopeless when I lost my mom. I didn't know what would happen to me. My mom's cousin is a teacher, and she and her husband took me in to care for me. They put me in school. I thank God for them every day. Today, I am in the 6th grade! And I love school. Math is my favorite subject—it makes me feel smart when I can solve a problem. I also love getting to be with friends at school and eating lunch together. The food helps us focus, which is important—especially during exam time. One day, I dream of becomin
