Stories of Hope | April 2024

While our Haitian staff continues to lead with courage and boldness despite the unrest in Haiti , we want to share some of the ways God has been at work in the Dominican Republic. We’ll continue to share more about One Island. One Mission. in the days to come, but our vision for ministry spans across the island and encompasses church advancement, education, and food security.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC | FAMILY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Mission of Hope recognizes access to food as a fundamental human right. Our approach to food security ensures that individuals have regular access to sufficient food while supporting communities, families, and individuals' ability to provide for their food and nutritional needs.

The Family Assistance Program in the Dominican Republic continues to be an avenue of provision for families who need additional support. A partner pastor in the Dominican Republic, Carmen, shared:

More than just receiving food, 80 families were prayed for and learned that there is a local church in the community here to serve them. One of the neighbors who had sent letters to the city council, objecting to having an evangelical church when we started the building process, was blessed through the distribution of food. We prayed for him and his family, and it was shocking to see the way he received us! The impact was even greater than we expected. We are grateful to Mission of Hope for the support. May God be glorified!

The week before Easter, six pastors gathered together to pack 150 bags to distribute to their communities. The pastors prayed for those who would receive the bags. They also spent time as a group praying for the crisis in Haiti and for those experiencing extreme hunger right across the border. Many of these pastors have family members and friends in Haiti, and they acutely understand the gravity of the situation.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC | HOPEGO

March is one of the favorite months of the year around Mission of Hope, with hundreds of people traveling to serve on HopeGo mission trips during spring break. Each year, we are continually amazed by how God strategically brings the right people, to the right place, at the right time. This year was no different, as our Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic campus was filled with students, families, medical professionals, and young adults who gave of their time to serve.

The local pastors were inspired, eqiupped, and reinvigorated with the encouragement that there are people from all over who wanted to serve their communities. Both Haitian and Dominican pastors were able to expand their reach and pour into their neighborhoods through kid’s ministry, medical clinics, sports camps, gospel-centered conversations, and more.

After hosting a mobile clinic at his church alongside a medical team, Pastor David shared:

The mobile clinic was wonderful! I don't have enough words to express my gratitude. The people in the community have been waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time. I'm already getting questions on when the next one will be. I felt so much joy seeing Dominicans come into our church to be seen as well, that is when I realized it is not only Haitians that needed this, but Dominicans as well.

If you’re looking for a place to serve this year, we’d love to invite you on a HopeGo trip to the Dominican Republic. You can check out trip dates here.

Densia’s Story

Esterline’s story began in a place of deep fear and uncertainty. His mom was very sick, and their family had already spent everything they had trying to help her; going from place to place, even to a voodoo doctor, hoping something would work. But nothing changed. She was still just as sick, and they were left with no money and no answers. In the middle of dealing with his mother’s illness and his own desperation for her to get better, Esterline cried out to God. “If you save my mom,” he prayed, “I will follow you for the rest of my life.” Not long after, he asked his small group leader and their village champion to come to his home and pray. As they stood together and lifted up his mom, something powerful happened. Not just physically, but spiritually. In that moment, she chose to put her trust in Jesus. And things began to change. Day by day, her health started to improve… until she was completely healed. But the story doesn’t stop there. Esterline remembered the promise he made. He went to the village champion and said, “I need Jesus. I remember my promise to God.” And he chose to follow Him. Now, instead of fear filling their home, there is joy. Instead of searching for answers, they have found hope. Together, they go to church. Together, they worship. What started as desperation turned into a story of healing.

March was packed, and we can’t wait to tell you about it! Over the course of the month of March, 361 team members came alongside the work in the Dominican Republic, helping serve 1,535 people through medical care and reaching 746 more through Strategic Ministry Time. We welcomed over 2,200 kids into Kids Club, and most importantly, we celebrated 61 people who made the decision to follow Christ! While in the community of Los Higos, one of our teams spent time with a couple who are both battling cancer. After spending most of their savings on medication, they were often left without enough money to even buy clean drinking water. Through local church leaders, we were able to reach their home and give them a water filter that will provide safe, clean water for the next 10 years. As the team shared how the filter takes water that isn’t safe and transforms it into something clean and pure, they explained how Jesus does the same in our lives—washing, restoring, and making us new. Sitting there in their home, the couple was moved to tears. In that moment, both chose to accept Christ. We are so thankful for every team member that came down, ready to serve, share the Gospel and bring hope to every man, woman and child across the Dominican Republic.
