Education | Heubreux's Story | It's Never Too Late | Video

Years ago, Heubreux began to share the story of how God has moved in his life through Mission of Hope.

My father always said, “The best soldier is the one who gets up and keeps fighting.” I have had to fight for a better life.

When I was young, my father was very, very old, and my mom was sick. I had to stop going to school after kindergarten because my family could not afford it. I had no way to get an education.

When I was 13, a sponsor made it possible for me to go to school again. At the Mission of Hope school, I was provided with an education and food every day. Because I had missed so much school, I started 2nd grade when I was 13. The students made fun of me because I was so old.

I was encouraged to learn that Toussaint Louvertue, the leader of the Haitian Revolution, was educated in his late 40s. So you’re never too old. I wanted to give up, but the teachers encouraged me, “Don’t give up.” At the age of 27, I finally made it! It was a good day for me. I am the first person in my family to ever graduate. It was good for me.

Now, I am an Education Champion at Mission of Hope. Part of my job is to visit the partner schools. I help sponsors and students communicate with each other. I know from personal experience how special this is for students. I also bring gifts and take photos of the kids to send to their sponsors.

As I look at the kids we are helping, I am reminded of the impact that Mission of Hope has had in my life. I pray that even more children can get an education and live out their dreams. Just like me.

So many people have helped me over the years. My parents helped me, my sponsor, my teachers, and God. God is all I have. I have all I need.

I have learned that God has a purpose for my life and to never give up.

Heubreux graduated high school at Mission of Hope in 2016 and is continuing to pursue his dreams. This is his story today.

I’m very happy today to share with you some updates about my life. So much has happened in my life in the past six years.

Since graduating, I received a college sponsorship to go to university for Civil Engineering. I am currently in year four of a five-year program. I am studying very hard to do well in my classes and graduate next year.

I am also working for Mission of Hope in a new role as data coordinator for sponsored students. It has been so great working for Mission of Hope while going to school, and they have been kind and flexible to work with me around my busy class schedule.

Even though I’ve lost both of my parents, my family has grown. After graduating from high school, I married a beautiful woman named Daphney, and together we have two sons—Danny and Dahan.

I am so happy, and I know who I am, because I know who God has made me to be. I have a goal to take the knowledge I have received and share it with others. I want to pay back Mission of Hope for all the Lord has done in my life through them.

Often, when I am with my teachers or friends, I share my story with them. I don’t share just to tell them about who I am, but I share to tell them what God has done in my life, and what He can do in their lives, too. I want them to know Jesus like I know Him. Without Jesus, I don’t know where I’d be. But now, my life has changed forever.

God is all I have - I have all I need.

Esterline’s story began in a place of deep fear and uncertainty. His mom was very sick, and their family had already spent everything they had trying to help her; going from place to place, even to a voodoo doctor, hoping something would work. But nothing changed. She was still just as sick, and they were left with no money and no answers. In the middle of dealing with his mother’s illness and his own desperation for her to get better, Esterline cried out to God. “If you save my mom,” he prayed, “I will follow you for the rest of my life.” Not long after, he asked his small group leader and their village champion to come to his home and pray. As they stood together and lifted up his mom, something powerful happened. Not just physically, but spiritually. In that moment, she chose to put her trust in Jesus. And things began to change. Day by day, her health started to improve… until she was completely healed. But the story doesn’t stop there. Esterline remembered the promise he made. He went to the village champion and said, “I need Jesus. I remember my promise to God.” And he chose to follow Him. Now, instead of fear filling their home, there is joy. Instead of searching for answers, they have found hope. Together, they go to church. Together, they worship. What started as desperation turned into a story of healing.

March was packed, and we can’t wait to tell you about it! Over the course of the month of March, 361 team members came alongside the work in the Dominican Republic, helping serve 1,535 people through medical care and reaching 746 more through Strategic Ministry Time. We welcomed over 2,200 kids into Kids Club, and most importantly, we celebrated 61 people who made the decision to follow Christ! While in the community of Los Higos, one of our teams spent time with a couple who are both battling cancer. After spending most of their savings on medication, they were often left without enough money to even buy clean drinking water. Through local church leaders, we were able to reach their home and give them a water filter that will provide safe, clean water for the next 10 years. As the team shared how the filter takes water that isn’t safe and transforms it into something clean and pure, they explained how Jesus does the same in our lives—washing, restoring, and making us new. Sitting there in their home, the couple was moved to tears. In that moment, both chose to accept Christ. We are so thankful for every team member that came down, ready to serve, share the Gospel and bring hope to every man, woman and child across the Dominican Republic.
