FOOD INSECURITY IN HAITI
Background: Haiti is in the midst of a severe and protracted crisis, marked by political, economic, and humanitarian challenges. In Summer 2018 widespread protests erupted when the government suspended oil subsidies, resulting in fuel shortages, reduced power and telecommunications, and a shortage of clean water. The assassination of the President in July 2021 left the nation leaderless, and the economy has suffered from four years of negative growth and soaring inflation.
Food Crisis: Severe food insecurity and malnutrition currently persist. A total of 5 million+ people are currently in a state of food crisis or emergency, phase 3 and phase 4 as classified by the IPC (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification). Food insecurity has reached a critical juncture, further exacerbated by blocked and dangerous roads due to gang activity. Those most vulnerable are disproportionately affected, lacking the resources to secure essential supplies.
MOH NUTRITION PROGRAM
- Mission of Hope is making a significant impact by serving over 125,000 kids each school day through our nutrition program, which includes partner schools and orphanages. In the face of a prolonged crisis, MOH's dedicated team has remained steadfast in their commitment to serving those most in need.
- To ensure the most vulnerable are being reached, MOH persistently delivers food to schools and orphanages nationwide. Through discrete distributions and decentralized warehouses, MOH’s team has implemented secure, safe, and effective methods to ensure food is getting into the hands of those who need it most every month.
- Mannapacks within schools ensure students receive a nutritious meal each day.
- The comprehensive nature of these meal packs means that even if the school solely relies on them, they provide enough of a nutritious meal to sustain students throughout their academic day
TEAM HOPE OVERVIEW
Team Hope is a group of people committed to meeting the most critical needs in Haiti. Right now that need is food. The current reality is that millions of kids in Haiti do not know where they will get their next meal. It only costs about $10 a month to provide a child with a daily, nutritious meal. Join Team Hope and one by one help us get these kids off the waitlist and from hunger to HOPE.
NUTRITION STORY
My name is Ismaël. I am 14 years old, and I am in the 6th grade at a school in the mountains. I am living with my mother, father, and seven siblings. There are eight of us children in total! My mom is a small merchant, and my dad is a gas station attendant. They work hard, but with eight children, it’s very difficult to provide all we need each day. The food from Mission of Hope is very important to me, and I like to eat it. It also makes me not want to miss school because I know I’ll get a good meal! Sometimes, the food I get at school is the only food I have for the day. I go home and cannot find food to eat at home. But because of the meal I get at school, I have the strength to study and do my homework. My parents work hard to put us in school, and I’m very thankful the school helps my parents by providing food. I pray every day for Mission of Hope and those who make this possible.
